Early list of potential All-Star snubs

Picking the All-Star teams is always hard. Here is Buster Olney's list of players who should be considered but may be left behind because of a ballot crunch -- including a pair of Cubs starters. One of them, Jason Hammel, is on the hill today in Miami.

How to fix the Pittsburgh Pirates?

Jim Bowden says it's not time for the Pirates to panic, because he knows what changes are necessary to make this team a real contender.

Where do Cubs go without pitching and defense?

When John Lackey and the defense struggled to get the job done against the Marlins, the Cubs got a sense of how tough things can get when everything isn't going their way.

Michael Pineda might be better than his stats

Although Saturday's start was against a lineup with minimal offensive power, Michael Pineda looked more like the pitcher the Yankees hope he can be.

At 34, Tigers' Kinsler is powering up

Speedy and spry, yet still able to hit for power, Ian Kinsler is causing a lot of problems for opponents and making a case that he's the Tigers' MVP.

Atlanta's best move might be keeping Teheran

Julio Teheran is a valuable trade chip, but if the Braves can't get a big enough return, they might better off holding onto the young righty.

MLB's delicate balance with big data

Technologies that track player performance are the next frontier in baseball's analytic revolution. But the ever-growing quantification of things never tracked is now forcing MLB to balance big data with "big brother," Rian Watt writes.

Clayton Kershaw, who starts for the Dodgers on Sunday night at Pittsburgh, had a 1.77 ERA, a 0.86 WHIP and a 7.7 strikeout-to-walk ratio when he won Cy Young and MVP awards in 2014. This season, Kershaw has a 1.57 ERA, a 0.67 WHIP and a 20.1 K/BB.

Chad Kuhl will make his major league debut on Sunday, potentially lining him up for a Saturday start at Oakland. His performance tonight would influence the Game Score projection; I'll try to update that afterward.

The Nationals scratched Stephen Strasburg on Sunday, which casts doubt upon his Week 13 status. Barring good news in the next 24 hours, he's too risky to keep in.

Chi Chi Gonzalez joins the Rangers' rotation on Monday at the Yankees, with a 47 projected Game Score.

Wade Miley rejoins the Mariners' rotation on Wednesday versus the Pirates, with a 50 projected Game Score. He's a "no" for me, though the Pirates' offense is cold.

Sean Manaea rejoins the A's on Wednesday versus the Giants, with a 50 projected Game Score. They're lefty heavy but I'd prefer to wait a week before activating him.

Juan Lagares, who landed on the disabled list with that partial tear in his right thumb, is doing baseball activity in Florida. He could enter rehab games in the near future. Assistant GM John Ricco said Lagares still will need to learn whether he can play on a regular basis before a determination of whether surgery will be avoided can be made.

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

Zack Wheeler is due to long toss in Port St. Lucie on Monday. It will mark his first time throwing since receiving the cortisone injection last week in New York for elbow discomfort. The Mets say Wheeler's surgically repaired elbow is structurally sound. It certainly appears as though Wheeler will not reach the majors until August, although the Mets have been noncommittal on a revised timetable.

Terry Collins said Jeurys Familia is likely unavailable Sunday and Addison Reed may not be available, either. Hansel Robles or Erik Goeddel may close on Sunday against the Braves.

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

Curtis Granderson and Asdrubal Cabrera both needed a day off. Granderson's legs are tired, according to Terry Collins. Cabrera, who never does, asked for Sunday off. At least they'll be fresh for Nationals series.
