That will be it for Jake Arrieta after he walks the first two in the eighth and misses on eight of his last nine pitches. Terrific performance for the kinda-sorta struggling ace, now it's up to the Cubs' new monster bullpen to do their thing. Hector Rondon is in; Aroldis Chapman is up and getting loose.

Nationals didn't want to pay the price of any of their top prospect pitchers to solve their desperate closer need and accomplished that today when they landed the Pirates Mark Melancon in exchange for lefty reliever Felipe Rivero and minor league left-handed pitcher Taylor Hearn. The Nats had Davis, Miller, Chapman all ahead of Melancon on their target list but didn't like the exorbitant asking price. Melancon a 3-time all star including last 2 yrs has 1.51 ERA 0.96 whip. Cheap price to pay considering present sellers market.

Other clubs report the Astros are still hunting for starters but only if it's a rotation upgrade. Could be a fit on Edinson Volquez or the Rays' starters

Jayson Stark ESPN Senior Writer

The Nationals had to find a closer. They found one in Pittsburgh. Get Mark Melancon for LHP Felipe Rivero and LHP Taylor Hearn. Nationals give up two good arms but hold onto Lucas Giolito, Trea Turner & Reynaldo Looez

Less for Lucroy

In most summers, Jonathan Lucroy would be one of the most attractive players in the trade market. So why are the Brewers having trouble finding a trade fit for him? Buster Olney explains (Insider)

Another great outing for J.A. Happ as he allows three hits and fans 11 in 7+ innings. He may have benefited from a wide strike zone, but be painted the corners and is going to improve to 14-3 with an ERA just over 3.00 ... and the Blue Jays, assuming they hold this 9-1 lead, will move past the Orioles into first place.

Melancon is going to be a free agent at year's end; Pirates get five more years of control with Rivero. Plus a prospect. Makes sense for PIT

Bradford Doolittle ESPN Staff Writer

We're through five quick innings and the Cubs righty-loaded lineup still hasn't managed a hit against Seattle lefty Wade Miley. Chicago's Jake Arrieta has been nearly as sharp, so we've got a scoreless pitcher's duel on our hands.

Reports: Nationals trade for Melancon
