Why hasn't the slide rule increased double plays?

A close play at second base to start a double play no longer involves the take-out slide. It is a free pass to convert, and yet conversions are not increasing in percentage.

Birthday boy Alex Rodriguez on still being on a major league roster: "When I first started to play this game, as a a young lad, I never thought I'd be playing in the major leagues for so long; especially at 41," A-Rod said. Alex Rodriguez on turning 41: "I'm getting old," Rodriguez said. "It makes you feel grateful, not a lot of 41-year-olds get to wear a baseball uniform every day. That's one. I definitely feel grateful for health, family, friends and just the opportunity to wear pinstripes."

The Milwaukee Brewers' trade talks involving Jonathan Lucroy have gained momentum, and it's looking more and more as if they'll move him by Monday's deadline. Cleveland, Houston and Texas are all in the mix for Lucroy, and at least three other clubs have expressed interest. It's almost time for general manager David Stearns to ask for everyone's best offer and make his call.

The Cardinals remain noncommittal about who will start for them Saturday in Miami, but they continue to call top prospect Alex Reyes' removal from a Triple-A start Tuesday as an emergency measure in case one of the in-house options is unavailable. The likeliest pitcher to start in an important game against the Marlins is reliever Tyler Lyons. "He's doing everything he can and needs to to earn that. We're still heavily considering him if all things work out right up to that point," Matheny said. The Cardinals envision Lyons as part of their rotation long-term, but they are carrying him in their bullpen because he is out of options.

Jay Bruce continues to hit home runs and his trade value continues to go up. His 25th home run proved to be the winning run in the Reds' 2-1 win over the slumping Giants. Bruce has always had a big home/road split, but he's hitting everywhere right now, which should make him an attractive option to the Dodgers, Mariners, Giants or Indians.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi is apparently not sentimental when it comes to birthdays. Alex Rodriguez turned 41 on Wednesday, but did not get a spot in the lineup against righty Lance McCullers. It is not a surprise as Girardi planned to DH Carlos Beltran all three games here in Houston. It is the fifth game in a row Rodriguez has been benched.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon is shaking up the back end of his lineup a little bit. Struggling outfielder Jason Heyward is batting seventh for the first time this season while .200 hitter Miguel Montero will move up to fifth. The Cubs have slumped on offense over the past four games as they take on the White Sox tonight.

Don't ignore Stephen Strasburg in the NL Cy Young race. He's now 14-1 with a 2.68 ERA and while voters don't weigh wins as much as they used to, 14-1 does stand out. My biggest knock on him is he's pitched 8 innings just twice. But he's pitched fewer than 6 just once (5.1) and he is eighth in the NL in innings.
