Williams, Fregosi interview for Astros' spot

Associated Press

HOUSTON -- Former major league managers Jim Fregosi and Jimy Williams interviewed Wednesday with the Houston Astros, who said they wouldn't talk to any more candidates for their managerial job until next week.

Astros third base coach Mike Cubbage, Triple-A New Orleans manager Tony Pena and Milwaukee Brewers third base coach Jerry Royster previous interviewed with Houston, which forced Larry Dierker out after the Astros were swept by Atlanta in the first round of the playoffs.

Williams, 58, led the Red Sox to the AL championship series in 1999, where his team lost to the Yankees 4-1.

Fregosi, 59, has managed the Angels, White Sox, Phillies and Blue Jays since 1978, most recently Toronto. Fregosi currently is a special assistant to Atlanta general manager John Schuerholz.

"We had an open discussion about my philosophy and what I bring to the ballpark," Fregosi said. "This is an outstanding club with veteran players and up and coming young players and one that I would love to manage."
