MINNEAPOLIS -- Anaheim Angels reliever Dennis Cook is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury that could end his career.
Cook, 39, had an MRI on Monday, which confirmed that the left-hander has a torn labrum and a partial tear of the rotator cuff. He was going to have arthroscopic surgery, but he decided to rehabilitate his shoulder instead.
The team set no official timetable for his return, but manager Mike Scioscia said before Monday's game in Minnesota that Cook wouldn't be able to pitch anymore this season.
"I think we'll have to leave it open ended,'' Scioscia said. "You never know. Dennis has had a good career, but if the desire and drive to pitch is still there I think he'll give it a shot. We'll have to wait until after the surgery.''
Cook began his career in 1988 with San Francisco. He was 1-1 with a 2.86 earned-run average in 22 innings this year before being placed on the disabled list Saturday, but an injury at his age raises the question of whether he'll come back.
Anaheim's bullpen is already short-handed with right-hander Al Levine (right shoulder tendinitis) on the DL and closer Troy Percival also hurt. Percival was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to Friday, with an infection near his left Achilles tendon in a cut suffered during the All-Star break while boating with his family.
Percival, 3-1 with a 2.15 ERA and 22 saves, was examined at the Grossman Burn Center in Orange County in California Monday. Scioscia said he hopes to have Percival back in the bullpen when he's eligible to come off the DL on July 27.
Matt Wise was recalled from Triple-A Edmonton to take Percival's place. |
