The Chicago White Sox are aware of their logjam at the catching position, and have decided to do something about it.
The White Sox have finalized a deal with the Colorado Rockies that sends catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. to Colorado in return for minor league pitcher Enemencio Pachero. Alomar, 36, flew to Cooperstown, N.Y., on Sunday night as a member of the White Sox, who played the Rockies on Monday in the Hall of Fame Game. Chicago will pick up most of the remainder of Alomar's $2.9 million salary. The logjam at catcher in Chicago includes Josh Paul and Mark Johnson. Alomar, who will be a free agent at season's end, provides the Rockies with veteran leadership behind the plate, along with Gary Bennett. The former Gold Glove winner is hitting .287 with seven homers in 51 games. The Rockies became more concerned with adding another catcher after they lost Bobby Estalella for the season with a shoulder injury. |
