Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was far from amused that the Red Sox acquired slugger Cliff Floyd from the Expos before the trading deadline, The New York Post reported.
"If Major League Baseball owns Montreal and they get (Floyd) and (three) weeks later they trade him to our biggest competitor, that's hard to believe," Steinbrenner told The New York Post on Wednesday. "What's that say?" The Yankees owner was surprised that the media didn't criticize the Red Sox for taking on salary like he believed New York was. "It's a helluva deal for the Red Sox, but what's the difference between what they did and what we did?" The Boss asked. "They still owe a lot on the team. It's a very good move. I don't know how smart it is but certainly a good deal." New York's only moves before the deadline were to acquire slugger Raul Mondesi and starter Jeff Weaver. "(Brian) Cashman continues to assure me this team will win and I have to go along with him because he is the GM," Steinbrenner said. "His neck is out there but he likes this team a lot and we will see." |
