Pedro Martinez had some powerful words for the Red Sox on Saturday night, responding to the possibility of the team failing to give him a multiyear contract extension soon.
Martinez told The Boston Globe he would be willing to leave Boston after his deal is done. The Red Sox ace has one more year left of his six-year, $72.5 million contract, while the team has the option of keeping him in 2004 for $17.5 million or buying him out for $2.5 million. The 2004 season ''will be my last year if they don't pick up the option soon and negotiate with me,'' he said to the Globe. ''I'm sorry about that, but I'm going to have to hear what the other teams have to offer and that could be very risky. That's what got A-Rod out of Seattle and allowed all those free agents to go away.'' Martinez even threatened to pitch for the rival Yankees if the Red Sox are slowing picking up his 2004 option. "I would listen to every team in the big leagues, of course,'' he said to the Globe. ''I would love to finish my career in Boston, but are you going to stay with a woman who isn't going to love you forever and lets you know it?'' |
