No agreement expected soon in five-player deal

ESPN.com news services

The proposed five-player trade between the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks was not finalized on Thursday and may not happen at all, ESPN's Peter Gammons was told by a source close to the negotiations.

The sticking point apparently is that two players involved in the deal have no-trade clauses, and the source told Gammons that he "was not optimistic" that the deal would be finalized anytime soon.

Both Diamondbacks third baseman Matt Williams and Rockies outfielder Larry Walker would have to waive their no-trade clauses in order for the deal to go through, the source said.

The two players have until 4 p.m. ET on Friday to reach their decisions.

The Associated Press reports Williams will decide Friday whether to accept the trade or not.

The Rockies and Diamondbacks have tentatively worked out a deal that would sent Williams, first baseman Erubiel Durazo, outfielder David Dellucci and reliever Bret Prinz to the Rockies for Walker.

Williams' agent says the player's reluctance to go through with the trade stems from concern about the impact it would have on his three children. Williams has full custody of the three, ages 10, 11 and 12.

Walker has indicated he is inclined to accept the trade, but the Diamondbacks want him to defer a share of the $25 million he is due to receive in 2004 and 2005.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
