City of Chicago, Cubs tangle over landmark process

Associated Press

CHICAGO -- After two years of working on a deal to make Wrigley Field a landmark, the city of Chicago is moving ahead without the Chicago Cubs.

City Hall yesterday denied the Cubs' request for an extension on beginning the landmark process. That means the process begins with a public hearing in March.

The Cubs never wanted Wrigley made a landmark because doing so would give the city greater say over changes to the 88-year-old ballpark.

But two years ago the team agreed to work with the city on landmarking in the hope that a negotiated deal would be less restrictive.

The team wants to expand its bleacher seating and add night games. But nearby residents won't stand for that unless the team improves parking, security and public urination problems first.
