Banged-up Griffey given day off Thursday

Associated Press

CINCINNATI -- Ken Griffey Jr. was out of the Cincinnati Reds' lineup Thursday as a precaution, giving his right arm a day to recover from a slight aggravation.

Griffey tweaked the arm on an awkward swing during a 6-2 victory Wednesday night over the New York Yankees. He homered on the next pitch, then left the game.

Tests were negative, and Griffey isn't expected to miss a lot of time.

The center fielder dislocated his right shoulder while trying to make a diving catch on April 5, sidelining him for 5½ weeks. He returned before the shoulder was fully healed, choosing to play while he regains his strength.

Doctors had warned that until he's back to full strength, he could irritate the shoulder with a bad swing.

"If he takes an awkward swing and misses the ball, he may experience some pain in the upper arm,'' trainer Mark Mann said Thursday. "They're short-term things that will decrease as the season goes on.''

Griffey felt numbness and tingling from the shoulder down the arm after the swing. The sensations went away, and he hit his 475th career homer off Mike Mussina on the next pitch.

Griffey is tied for 22nd on the career list with Stan Musial and Willie Stargell. Griffey's father, Ken Sr., was with Atlanta in 1987 when Stargell was a coach.

Junior remembers visiting for a game and spending time with Stargell, who hit him fly balls in the outfield.

"He hit me fungos for an hour,'' Griffey said. "That was the first time I watched a game from the dugout. He lit my shoestrings on fire, too.''
