Owners ready for two-day meeting

NEW YORK -- Baseball owners are not likely to take any
action on the Montreal Expos when they gather in New York for two
days of meetings starting Wednesday.

The relocation committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday and all
owners gather the following day. The next major development on the
Expos could occur in several weeks, when the committee meets with
commissioner Bud Selig, who will decide the next step.

Montreal's franchise is being sought by Las Vegas; Monterrey,
Mexico; Norfolk, Va.; Northern Virginia; Portland, Ore.; San Juan,
Puerto Rico; and Washington, D.C.

In recent weeks, Washington and Portland have announced plans to
arrange financing for new ballparks. Bob DuPuy, baseball's chief
operating officer, hopes to have a decision by mid-July on where
the Expos will play starting in 2005.
