Rockies sign Marrero to minor-league contract

DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies said Monday they have signed catcher-outfielder Eli Marrero to a minor-league contract and invited him to the club's spring camp.

Marrero, 32, appeared in 54 games with Kansas City and Baltimore last season but missed the last two months with a sprained right thumb.

He spent eight seasons in the National League with St. Louis and Atlanta before moving to the American League last year.

Marrero has played more outfield than catcher for the past five years and spent the last three season playing outfield and first base.

He was the Cardinals' third-round draft pick in 1993.
