Rangers agree to contracts with Padilla, Matthews

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Right-hander Vicente Padilla and
outfielder Gary Matthews agreed Friday to one-year deals with the
Texas Rangers, and free-agent pitcher Antonio Alfonseca agreed to a
minor league contract.

Padilla will get $4.41 million and Matthews settled at
$2,387,500. Their agreements leave outfielder Kevin Mench as the
last Rangers player in arbitration.

Matthews batted .255 with 17 homers and 55 RBI last season.
Padilla was 9-12 with a 4.71 ERA with the Phillies.

Mench, eligible for arbitration for the first time, asked for a
raise from $345,000 to $3.05 million. Texas offered $2.45 million.

Alfonseca, a right-hander, was 1-1 with a 4.94 ERA in 33
appearances for Florida last season.
