Transcript of Elia's meltdown

Editor's Note: A bleeped version of Lee Elia's tirade doesn't appear to be available for your listening pleasure. But here's an edited transcript of the 480-word, 187-second, expletive-laden rant:

"I'll tell you one [expletive] thing. I hope we get [expletive] hotter than [expletive] so we can stuff it up them 3,000 [expletive] people that show up every [expletive] day, because if they're the real Chicago [expletive] fans, they can kiss my [expletive] [expletive] right downtown and PRINT IT.

"They're really, really behind you around here … my [expletive] [expletive]. What the [expletive] am I supposed to do, go out there and let my [expletive] players get destroyed every day and be quiet about it? For the [expletive] nickel-dime people who turn up? The [expletive] don't even work. That's why they're out at the [expletive] game. They oughta go out and get a [expletive] job and find out what it's like to go out and earn a [expletive] living. Eighty-five percent of the [expletive] world is working. The other 15 come out here. A [expletive] playground for the [expletive].

"Rip them [expletive]. Rip them country [expletive] like the [expletive] players. We got guys busting their [expletive] [expletive], and them [expletive] people boo. And that's the Cubs? My [expletive] [expletive]. They talk about the great [expletive] support that players get around here. I haven't seen it this [expletive] year.

"The name of the game is hit the ball, catch the ball and get the [expletive] job done. Right now, we have more losses than we have wins. The [expletive] changes that have happened in the Cubs organization are multifold. All right, they don't show because we're 5-14. And unfortunately, that's the criteria of them dumb 15 [expletive] percent that come out to day baseball. The other 85 percent are earning a living.

"It'll take more than a 5-and-13 or 5-and-14 to destroy the makeup of this club. I guarantee you that. There's some [expletive] pros out there that wanna [expletive] play this game. But you're stuck in a [expletive] stigma of the [expletive] Dodgers and the Phillies and the Cardinals and all that cheap [expletive].

"All these [expletive] editorials about [Ron] Cey and [expletive] … ah … the Phillie-itis and all that [expletive] it's sickening. It's unbelievable. It really is. It's a disheartening [expletive] situation we're in right now. Five-14 doesn't negate that work. We've got 143 [expletive] games left.

"What I'm tryin' to say is, don't rip them [expletive] guys out there. Rip me. If you wanna rip somebody, rip my [expletive] [expletive]. But don't rip them [expletive] guys 'cause they're giving everything they can give. And once we hit that [expletive] groove, it will flow. And it will flow. The talent's there. I don't know how to make it any clearer to you. I'm frustrated. I'll guarantee you I'm frustrated. It'd be different if I walked in this room every day at 8:30 and saw a bunch of guys that didn't give a [expletive]. They give a [expletive]. And it's a tough National League East. It's a tough National League period."
