Gonzalez in lineup for Padres

SAN DIEGO -- Adrian Gonzalez was in the starting lineup for the San Diego Padres a night after straining his right knee while sliding into third base.

The first baseman said he convinced manager Bud Black that he was OK to play against the Houston Astros on Wednesday night.

"Buddy came in the training room and I ran around the training room and showed him I can play," Gonzalez said.

On Tuesday night, he hit an RBI triple off Mike Hampton with one out in the fourth and slid hard into third. After Kevin Kouzmanoff struck out, Gonzalez was visited by Black and trainer Todd Hutcheson. After a few minutes, Gonzalez came out of the game and was replaced by rookie Kyle Blanks.

"I didn't slide right. My body landed on top of my leg," Gonzalez said.

"He said he was much improved since last night," Black said. "We suspect everything's fine. He's ready to go, he wants to play. You can't keep a good man down."

Gonzalez is hitting .271 with 24 homers and 48 RBIs.
