Ailing Zimmerman gets a break

WASHINGTON -- Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman was held out of the starting lineup Tuesday night against Florida because of a sore left shoulder.

Zimmerman was hit by a pitch from Pittsburgh's Charlie Morton in the sixth inning of Monday's 8-4 victory over Pittsburgh. The soreness apparently got worse as the night went on, even though Zimmerman hit a two-run homer in the seventh.

Interim manager Jim Riggleman said the decision was made to give Zimmerman a break, and both said this is a day-to-day thing. Zimmerman has played in 103 of Washington's 106 games this year.

"I don't enjoy sitting the games out and taking days off," Zimmerman said. "We figured it would be better just to treat it all day and kind of get rid of it instead of maybe play through it and have to play like that for however long that takes."
