Fister to be M's 12th starter of 2009

SEATTLE -- Doug Fister will make his first major league start for the Mariners on Tuesday.

Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu said Sunday morning the team's latest call-up from Triple-A Tacoma will face the Chicago White Sox at home.

Fister was selected from the minor leagues Friday. He will be the 12th Mariners pitcher to start a game this season.

The right-hander is taking the rotation place of Jason Vargas. Vargas was demoted to Tacoma after allowing five runs in the first inning of a loss at Kansas City on Thursday.

The 25-year-old Fister was Seattle's seventh-round draft choice in 2006. He began this season at Double-A. He was 6-4 with a 3.81 ERA in 22 games, 17 starts at Tacoma before his promotion.
