Laird leaves with bruised left shin

MINNEAPOLIS -- Detroit Tigers catcher Gerald Laird left the game Tuesday night against the Minnesota Twins with a bruised left shin.

Laird fouled a ball off his leg in the top of the fifth inning and immediately went down in pain. Tigers trainers came out to examine him, but Laird finished the at-bat. He grounded out to third base and hobbled into the dugout.

The team says X-rays were negative. Laird is listed as day to day.

Alex Avila replaced him behind the plate in the bottom of the inning. Laird was 0-for-2 with two groundouts in the game.
