Diamondbacks sign reliever Ayala

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed reliever Luis Ayala to a minor league contract in the latest of several moves aimed at improving what has been the worst bullpen in baseball.

The 32-year-old right-hander has a 29-39 career record with a 3.67 ERA in parts of six major league seasons. He split last season with the Minnesota Twins and Florida Marlins, going 1-5 with a 5.63 ERA.

This season, Ayala was 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 14 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers' Triple-A team in Albuquerque before being released on May 17.

Ayala will report to Arizona's Triple-A affiliate in Reno.
