Rays' Upton returns from injury

MINNEAPOLIS -- Tampa Bay Rays center fielder B.J. Upton returned to the starting lineup on Saturday after missing the previous four games because of a quadriceps injury, his first start since a dugout confrontation with teammate Evan Longoria.

Manager Joe Maddon has maintained Upton's absence was due to the injury and not as a disciplinary measure for the dustup on Sunday.

Upton says his leg feels much better and he was sitting out for precautionary measures to avoid serious injury. Upton says it was tough to sit out and watch, but it was better to do it now rather than later.

Maddon put Upton in the sixth spot in the batting order. He says he didn't want to put too much pressure on Upton by placing him right back in his customary leadoff spot.
