Mike Hampton will go to Triple-A Reno

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed left-hander Mike Hampton to a minor league contract.

Diamondbacks general manager Jerry DiPoto says Saturday Hampton will be used as a reliever even though he has spent much of his career as a starter. The oft-injured 38-year-old will be assigned to Triple-A Reno.

Hampton went 7-10 with a 5.30 ERA for the Houston Astros last year before having shoulder surgery.

Hampton is 148-115 lifetime with a 4.07 ERA despite spending considerable time on the disabled list. He spent half of the 2008 season on the disabled list and he didn't pitch in 2006 or 2007 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
