Right-handed reliever Brandon Gomes was recalled from Triple-A Durham and joined the Rays for the opener of their four-game series in New York against the Yankees.
Davis allowed four runs on nine hits and three walks in five innings Wednesday at Minnesota.
Rays manager Joe Maddon said the problem had bothered Davis for the last two or three starts and hampered his slider. Maddon said Davis went back to Florida and that an MRI exam didn't reveal anything serious.
"I don't think it's going be a prolonged thing. It might be a minimal thing," Maddon said.
The 25-year-old Davis is 7-6 with a 4.25 ERA. The 26-year-old Gomes pitched 10 games for Tampa Bay earlier this season and had a 3.09 ERA.
