Tigers sign OF Jose Macias to two-year contract
LAKELAND, Florida (Ticker) -- The Detroit Tigers on Wednesday
signed outfielder Jose Macias to a two-year contract.
With the departure of free agent outfielder Roger Cedeno, Macias
will take over as the team's center fielder and leadoff hitter
for the 2002 season.
The 28-year-old Macias spent his first full season in the majors
last year, played all three outfield positions along with second
base and third base and hit .268 with eight homers, 51 RBI and
21 stolen bases. However, he drew just 32 walks in 488 at-bats
for a weak on-base percentage of .316.
Macias continued to work on his offensive skills in the
offseason, capturing the Panamanian Winter League's batting
crown with a .323 batting average.
The Tigers also agreed with pitchers Jeff Farnsworth, Kris
Keller and Mike Maroth and outfielder Andres Torres on one-year
contracts.
