Napoli's Tale Of Two Doubles
From Elias: Mike Napoli led off the second inning with a double, then the Red Sox batted around and Napoli produced a three-run double on his second at-bat of a seven-run inning that the Sox rode to a 7-2 win at Cleveland. The last major-league player who produced both a leadoff double and a three-run double in the same inning was Vladimir Guerrero for the Expos against the Yankees in 1998; before Vlad, you have to go back to Manny Trillo for the Cubs against the Mets back in 1977. It took three hours, 30 minutes to complete the contest, as the teams combined for the remarkable total of 40 plate appearances on which the ball was not put in play. In fact, it was the first nine-inning game in modern major league history in which the teams combined for at least 15 walks and at least 25 strikeouts.
