How Do You Spell Relief? S-t-r-i-k-e-o-u-t-s
From Elias: The Brewers nipped the Cubs, 2-1, at Wrigley Field on Wednesday, in a game in which relief pitchers (on both teams) recorded a total of 13 outs, 12 of which came on strikeouts. Frankie Rodriguez, John Axford and Kerry Wood each got all three of their outs on strikeouts; Carlos Marmol got two of his three on strikes (Alex Gonzalez fouled out for the other out); and James Russell earned his only out on a punch-out. So if you were among the 34,044 fans in the Friendly Confines yesterday, you saw some history: That was the first game in major-league history in which relief pitchers recorded at least 10 outs, with at least 90 percent of those outs coming on strikeouts. The previous highest percentage in a game in which relievers got 10-or-more outs was also a Brewers-Cubs game at Wrigley, back on June 28, 2006, when 10 of 12 bullpen outs came on strikeouts.
