Lester's Masterpiece A Treat For Fenway Fans
From Elias: Jon Lester allowed only one base runner -- Maicer Izturis stroked a double in the sixth inning - in a complete-game 5-0 victory over the Blue Jays in front of the Fenway Faithful. Lester became only the second Red Sox pitcher to throw a complete-game shutout of nine-or-more innings at Fenway Park in which he allowed as few as one hit and walked none. The only other Boston pitcher to do that in Fenway's 102 seasons was Hideo Nomo, who threw a one-hitter of that type, also against the Blue Jays, on May 25, 2001. (Two Red Sox pitchers had one-hit, no-walk, complete-game shutouts of nine-plus innings in the early days of the franchise, when the team played its home games at Huntington Avenue Grounds: Ray Collins in 1910 and Cy Young himself in 1908. Young also threw a perfect game at Huntington Avenue Grounds in 1904.) Lester boosted his career won-lost record to 90-48, joining 10 other pitchers who earned their first 90 big-league victories for the Red Sox. But no pitcher had done that since Roger Clemens won his 90th back in 1989. Three of the 10 others got to 90 wins did so with fewer than 50 losses: Clemens (90-42), Mel Parnell (90-47) in 1952 and Smoky Joe Wood (90-48) in 1913.
