Johnson's Problems Continue
From Elias: The Blue Jays rallied for four ninth-inning runs against Jim Johnson, capped by Munenori Kawasaki's two-run double that gave Toronto a 6-5 walk-off win over the Orioles. It was Johnson's fourth blown save opportunity in his last six games (since May 14) and Johnson was tagged with the loss in three of those games, including Sunday. The only other pitcher who's been charged with three losses this season in games that he entered in save situations is Houston's Jose Veras.

Johnson's Slump Deepens
After converting 35 consecutive save opportunities, Jim Johnson has now blown three in a row. Johnson allowed a game-tying home run to Travis Hafner in the ninth inning on Monday night, and the Yankees went on to defeat the Orioles, 6-4, in 10 innings. Johnson's save streak was by far the longest in major-league history that ended with a run of three straight blown saves. The previous record was 23 consecutive saves by Tom Henke of the Blue Jays in 1986-87. Incidentally, Henke got right back on his horse after that brief slump, converting his next 17 saves.

Padres Rally Against Johnson For Late Win
From Elias: The Padres rallied for two runs off Jim Johnson in the ninth inning to post a 3-2 victory at Baltimore. It's tough to say which was more unlikely: San Diego's rally or Johnson's failure. It was only the fourth win over the last three seasons in which the Padres trailed during or after the ninth inning, tying them with the Yankees for the fewest such victories in the majors during that time. For his part, Johnson entered the game with a streak of 35 consecutive save conversions, by far the longest in the majors at the time. In fact only two pitchers had streaks even half as long as Johnson's: Grant Balfour, 24; and Mariano Rivera, 20.
