Longoria's Walkoff Hr Beats Padres, Evokes Memories
From Elias: It wasn't the most important walkoff homer that Evan Longoria has ever hit, but the Tampa Bay third baseman connected for the fifth walkoff round-tripper of his major-league career with a two-out blow off the Padres' Huston Street that turned a 7-6 deficit into an 8-7 victory for the Rays. Longoria's last one came off the Yankees' Scott Proctor on Sept. 28, 2011, a last-night-of-the-season, 12th-inning shot that gave the Rays a victory that put them into the playoffs. But even though Longoria has done it before - he has also victimized Justin Speier, Takashi Saito and Logan Ondrusek for walkoff long balls - this was the first time that his game-ending blow had come with the Rays trailing. Since the start of the 2008 season, only Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp, with six apiece, have enjoyed more walkoff homers than has Longoria. Johnny Damon, Jason Giambi and Ryan Zimmerman, like Longoria, have five over that stretch.

MLB - Longoria has career day at 3rd
Evan Longoria made a career-high 4 Good Fielding Plays (GFPs) as video tracked by Baseball Info Solutions today in the Rays loss to the Orioles. Previously, he had 15 games with 3 GFPs. According to BIS, Longoria has saved the most runs via GFPs among 3rd baseman since joining the league in 2008. Over the past 2 seasons, Longoria averaged a GFP per 17 innings in the field, tied with Ryan Zimmerman for the best rate among 3rd basemen in that span. * Top 4, 2 outs, runner on 2nd, Longoria makes a diving stop on a Brian Roberts grounder in the hole and throws from his knees to save the Rays a run. Note James Loney also gets a GFP for the scoop at 1st. * Top 5, 1 outs, Longoria makes a play on a top spin heavy Manny Machado grounder, catching the ball behind him and as he spins to make the throw. * Top 5, 2 outs, next batter, Longoria makes a play on an Adam Jones grounder in the hole, rolling on the ground and throwing from his backside. Loney gets another GFP for the scoop. * Top 9, 0 out, Longoria makes another diving stop, this time on Matt Weiters, makes another throw from the knees, and Loney makes yet another pick with excellent footwork.
