His average fastball velocity dropped precipitously, from 92.2 mph in 2011 to 90.3 last year, the effectiveness of his other pitches declined as a result, and in the first half of the season, he had only four quality starts, a 6.42 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 18 games. Forced to adjust, Lincecum picked up the pace somewhat after the All-Star break, tallying nine quality starts, a 3.83 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 15 games, and to his credit he adapted beautifully to a swingman role during the Giants' World Series championship run. Maybe all this means is that his new baseline is more like a 3.75 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 8.50 K/9 pitcher than the 2.81/1.17/9.97 model of 2008-11. But isn't it at least possible that: (A) Some of his lost velocity returns with a winter's rest, and he inches closer to his past form; or (B) his stuff continues to decline and he suffers another unusable half-season? There are few pitchers with wider probability ranges than Lincecum's for 2013.
