Unfortunately, the strikes he was throwing weren't all that impressive, and he nearly allowed the Angels to get back into this one. Davis was forced from the game in the sixth with two men on and only one out. Reliever Tim Collins allowed one of the inherited runners to score, but put the fire out shortly thereafter. He's now allowed 23 runs over his last five starts and is 1-3 in that span. Davis is going to need to start showing something more, beginning with his next start in Houston, or we could start hearing talk of a possible move back to the bullpen.","date":"Thu May 16"},"fullName":"Wade Davis","seasonOutlook":{"outlook":"Acquired from the Rays in the winter's James Shields-Wil Myers trade, Davis was declared an official member of the Royals' 2013 Opening Day rotation shortly thereafter. It makes sense; his placement in the Rays' bullpen last season wasn't a criticism of his ability, but rather a result of a bevy of choices for rotation spots, and in Kansas City, Davis' skills are greater than most of the alternatives. He made huge strides with his off-speed stuff in 2012 -- opponents batted .117/.144/.128 against his curve, slider and changeup -- a plus considering he'll need to dial back down his fastball 1-2 mph in his return to the rotation. Davis' improvements might fly beneath the radar, making him an attractive AL-only or deep-mixed sleeper, especially if he impresses during spring training.
