His 1.95 ERA ranked seventh, his 0.80 WHIP and 6.64 strikeout-to-walk ratio both ranked third, and he posted a third-ranked 1.81 FIP that showed that his performance was hardly fluky. Some of that can be attributed to increased fastball velocity; he averaged 95.6 mph with the pitch in 2012, up from 94.8 in 2011. Plus, thanks to impressive splits versus right-handed hitters -- they batted only .098/.157/.134 against him -- McGee is capable of serving as a one-inning setup man, meaning he's a handy ERA/WHIP/K's helper. In time, this is the kind of pitcher who could compete for saves in the Rays' bullpen.
