He continues to serve as Pittsburgh's insurance policy at closer for Jason Grilli.","date":"Sun May 19"},"fullName":"Mark Melancon","seasonOutlook":{"outlook":"Melancon was a sneaky little pickup by the Pirates in the Joel Hanrahan deal, and considering that trade left Jason Grilli the last man standing as their closer, Melancon, an ex-closer himself, might quickly capture the role of next-in-line should Grilli falter. Don't take Melancon's surface rotisserie statistics too much to heart: His strikeout-to-walk rate actually rose (to 3.42), all of his luck-factor statistics were positively miserable (59.4 left-on-base percentage!) and he had a 4.19 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 37 appearances to conclude last year following a brief Triple-A stint to regroup. Melancon still possesses the skills to contribute to NL-only teams, and with a hot-enough start (coupled with any missteps by Grilli), he could find himself back in the hunt for saves in time.","seasonId":2013,"date":"Thu Feb 21"},"playerRater30DAY":0.3,"playerRater15DAY":-0.4,"positionRank":39}

Alvarez Solo Shot Stands Up
From Elias: The Pirates posted a 1-0 win with Jeff Locke, Mark Melancon and Jason Grilli combining to limit the Astros to three hits while Pedro Alvarez provided the offense with a fifth-inning home run. Alvarez was the third player to homer for the Pirates in a 1-0 victory at PNC Park, which opened for business in 2001. Humberto Cota homered there in a 1-0 win against the Mets in 2004 and Jason Bay's solo shot produced the game's lone run in a victory over the Reds in 2008.
