An intercostal strain cost him the first two months of the season, and when he returned, his velocity was down, he was pounded to the tune of a .357 batting average and nine home runs in six starts, costing him a demotion to Triple-A. Matusz did post a 3.46 ERA in nine starts there, but granted a late-season stint with the big club he pitched even worse than he did early in the year, with a 12.75 ERA in his final six turns. There were few more logical explanations than clearly Matusz was pitching hurt; it's for that reason he'll need to open some eyes during spring training for fantasy owners to even remotely trust him.
