Then the line became the Tigers wanted Porcello to take advantage of his natural sink, eschewing fascist strikeouts for the more democratic ground ball. Pitching to contact is nice, but if I am Porcello and I see the infield defense backing me, I am begging the club to let me start missing more bats. As a ground baller, Porcello's BABIP is typically higher than usual, leading to a few extra hits. His BB/9 is well below average, so that helps compensate. But a career K/9 of only 4.8 means too many balls are being put in play, resulting in a below-average left on base percentage and an ERA higher than one would prefer. He does fit the mold of hurling for a good team in a favorable park, so he is definitely worth a shot as a fantasy spot starter with the hopes he punches out some guys.
