Thanks to four seasons of mediocre fantasy stats, it's easy to forget that the right-hander is only 24 years old, and was once considered one of the top prospects in baseball. A low strikeout rate is largely responsible for his performance to date; he has averaged 5.00 K's per nine innings in his big league career after averaging a similarly lackluster 5.18 K's per nine in his one full year in the minors (2008). But while Porcello appears locked in as a low-level AL-only consideration, and perhaps a streaming candidate against the weakest offenses in the game, let's not completely discard his chances for a step forward in 2013. After all, he is one of only six pitchers to have improved both his K's per nine and K's per walk ratios in each of the past two seasons, and he also has increased his ground ball rate in each of those years.
