The Mariners' acquisition of Kendrys Morales puts the pressure on, as Jesus Montero is likely to slot in as designated hitter on occasion. The 2012 season was a step back for Smoak in terms of plate discipline, as his walk rate dropped below 10 percent while his strikeout rate exceeded 20 percent. In order for the switch-hitter to take full advantage of the cozier dimensions at Safeco Field, he will need to reverse those trends. Smoak is a risk in mixed leagues due to the uncertainty of his playing time, but is a viable late-corner option in AL-only leagues since he has the chance to force Seattle's hand and earn regular playing time.","seasonId":2013,"date":"Wed Feb 20"},"playerRater30DAY":-1.1,"playerRater15DAY":-1.9,"positionRank":39}

MLB - Mariners late back-to-back HR
Raul Ibanez and Justin Smoak hit back-to-back homers for the Mariners in the ninth inning off Chris Perez to tie the game. It's the first time Seattle has hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning or later since July 19, 2004. Miguel Olivo and Edgar Martinez went back-to-back against the Red Sox Keith Foulke in the ninth to tie the game before winning the game on a Bret Boone grand slam in the 11th.

Mariners are going to contend all summer

After another win in the Bronx last night, the Seattle Mariners are just a game below .500 and in second place in the AL West. This club was built on pitching and defense, and it's strong in both areas.
