On one hand, his 5.6 K/9, 3.4 BB/9 and 1.0 HR/9 were quite pedestrian and should have resulted in a season with an ERA in the 4s. But of course, Hellickson checked in at 2.95 and won the American League Rookie of the Year award for his efforts. An insanely low BABIP of .223 was the reason Hellickson was able to sport a sub-three ERA. Now before you argue that Hellickson may have induced such a low average on balls in play, be aware that he allowed line drives at a clip greater than league average, and it is line drives that exert the most influence over BABIP. There is no denying it: Hellickson enjoyed some great fortune in his inaugural campaign. The thing is, that is not the odd part. The fine folks over at Fangraphs crunched some numbers and discovered that Hellickson's swing-and-miss rate was way out of whack with his strikeouts, and in fact, he should have fanned about eight batters per nine innings, well above his 2011 rate. So while a huge correction is in store for his ERA as his BABIP regresses, at least part of this will be balanced by an increased K/9. All this uncertainty puts Hellickson in the high-risk, high-reward category until his peripherals stabilize.","seasonId":2012,"date":"Fri Feb 10"},"playerRater30DAY":2.1,"playerRater15DAY":3,"positionRank":39}
