No Sophomore Jinx For Hellickson
From Elias: Jeremy Hellickson allowed one run in six innings to top the Angels and improve his record to 3-0 this season. Hellickson is the second starting pitcher to begin a season 3-0 after winning the Rookie of the Year Award the previous year. Dontrelle Willis won his first three decisions for the 2004 Marlins after being named the National League's top rookie in 2003. Two relievers won their first three or more decisions the year after they took Rookie of the Year honors: Butch Metzger (4-0, 1977 Cardinals) and Gregg Olson (3-0, 1990 Orioles).

Hellickson is the 25th pitcher to start at least two games the season after winning the Rookie of the Year Award. Hellickson Starts Year 2 By Shutting Down Yankees
From Elias: Al McGuire often said, "The best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores." Well that's not always the case, but last season's AL Rookie of the Year, Jeremy Hellickson, took his first step toward avoiding a sophomore jinx with eight and two-thirds scoreless innings in the Rays' 3-0 victory over the Yankees. Of the 33 pitchers who won a ROY Award, only seven others won their first appearance the next season: Joe Black (1953), Jon Matlack (1973), John Montefusco (1976), Dave Righetti (1982), Fernando Valenzuela (1982), Dontrelle Willis (2004), and Huston Street (2006). Hellickson is the first of those pitchers to throw eight or more scoreless innings in winning his sophomore debut.
