Lawrie nearly broke camp with the big club last spring as he showed his bat was ready, but he was sent to Triple-A Las Vegas to work on his glove at the hot corner. He continued to rake on the farm while demonstrating a noticeable improvement with the leather. The tantalizing sophomore would have been called up earlier than his Aug. 4 debut were it not for fracturing his left hand after being hit by a pitch on May 31 and the subsequent rehab. When he finally did get the call, Lawrie displayed a mouth-watering combo of power and speed, even more attractive from a third baseman. All the necessary skills are there -- good contact, power and speed -- but be careful: He is barely 22 and being drafted like an established 10-year veteran.
