Four-hit Games For Dirks And Cabrera
From Elias: Andy Dirks and Miguel Cabrera each had four hits in the Tigers' victory over the Athletics. They were the fourth pair of teammates to each collect four hits in a game this season, joining Freddie Freeman and Eric Hinske, David Ortiz and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and Ruben Tejada and Scott Hairston. The only other Tigers tandem to do so over the last four seasons was Austin Jackson and Johnny Damon on September 25, 2010 against the Twins at Comerica Park.

Dirks Foils Girardi's 1st-inning Strategy, Just As Pena Had Done
From Elias: Andy Dirks, who debuted in the majors with the Tigers last year, belted a three-run homer in the first inning right after Prince Fielder had been intentionally walked, and the Tigers went on to take a 7-5 verdict at Yankee Stadium. Dirks had brought to the plate a career batting average of .097 (3 for 31) in first-inning at-bats, and had never driven in a run in the opening inning in his brief big-league career. Dirks's home run marked the second time this month that an opposing player has homered immediately after Yankees manager Joe Girardi had directed the issuance of an intentional walk in a game's first inning; in the season opener in St. Petersburg, the Rays' Carlos Pena connected for a grand-slam home run after CC Sabathia had given an intentional pass to Sean Rodriguez. Through the first three-plus weeks of the major-league season, there have been only two other (non-Girardi) instances of an intentional walk being issued in the first inning, one by the Giants, one by the Angels, though in those cases, the subsequent batters grounded into a double play and popped out, respectively. Prior to the homers by Pena and Dirks, the major leagues had not seen a first-inning home run immediately following an intentional walk since 2007, when Boston's Coco Crisp hit a three-run first-inning homer after Bobby Cox had directed Buddy Carlyle to intentionally pass Jason Varitek. Never mind twice in one month, the last major-league manager to be bitten by a home run immediately after a first-inning intentional walk twice in one season was the future Hall-of-Famer, Sparky Anderson, with the Tigers back in 1982.
