Cobb Strikes Out 13 But Leaves In 5th And Leaves His Mark In Baseball History
From Elias: Another day, another strikeout achievement. On Friday night, Alex Cobb racked up 13 strikeouts while pitching only four and two-thirds innings and wound up with no decision as the Rays came from behind to overtake the Padres, 6-3. Cobb became the first pitcher in major-league history to amass that many strikeouts in a game in which he pitched fewer than five innings. The strikeouts are piling up throughout baseball; attention must be paid. To be clear, Cobb wasn't the first big-league pitcher ever to rack up 13 strikeouts over the first 4¿ innings of a game - he was just the first one to come out of the game at that point, something that was unlikely to happen over most of baseball history, before managers' reliance on pitch counts became so pervasive. Randy Johnson was the last major-leaguer to get 13 strikeouts over the span of a game's first 14 outs; The Big Unit did it while pitching for the Diamondbacks at Houston in 2001. Cobb achieved some kind of immortality in the third inning of Friday's game when he struck out four batters, but allowed a run. The sequence: Will Venable struck out but reached first on a wild pitch, stole second as Chase Headley struck out, then stole third. Then, after Carlos Quentin fanned, Venable scored on a balk. Yonder Alonso ended the inning by striking out. Get this: Cobb became the first pitcher in major league history to strike out every batter that the opposition sent to the plate in an inning, but to allow a run in that inning!

Cobb Notches 11th Win Since August 1
From Elias: Alex Cobb improved his record to 4-2 this season in the Rays' 8-3 victory at Colorado. Cobb is 11-3 with a 2.97 ERA since August 1, 2012. That ties him with Gio Gonzalez (11-5, including his victory on Sunday) for the most wins in the majors over that span.

Rays Hold Yankees Power In Check
From Elias: Alex Cobb scattered three singles and Fernando Rodney allowed only a single in saving the victory for Cobb as the Rays defeated the Yankees, 3-0. Tampa Bay became the first team in nearly 13 years to play New York in consecutive games and not allow an extra-base hit in either. (The Yankees had nine hits, all singles, in a 4-3 win on Tuesday.) The last team to do so was Detroit, on May 13-14, 2000. The Tigers' starting pitchers were Jeff Weaver and Dave Mlicki.
