From Elias: David Phelps struck out nine batters in four innings in relief of Ivan Nova on Friday, matching the highest single-game total by a Yankees reliever in the last 50 seasons (1964 to 2013). Jay Howell struck out nine Mariners batters at the Kingdome in relief of Bob Shirley in the Yankees' second game of the 1983 season. Phelps is the first Yankees reliever ever to strike out nine or more batters while pitching no more than four innings.
