Second Straight Game With 8-plus Ks For Andy Pettitte
From Elias: Andy Pettitte struck out eight batters in seven innings in his win against the Royals on Wednesday. In his previous start he fanned nine in eight innings in a victory over the Reds. This is the first time that Pettitte has recorded eight or more strikeouts in each of two consecutive starts since July 9-15, 2006 when he was pitching for the Astros (8 Ks vs. St. Louis and 10 at Florida). Pettitte had not had back-to-back starts with at least eight strikeouts for the Yankees since 2003 (June 14-20, 8 SO vs. St. Louis and the Mets).

Pettitte And Ibanez Going Strong At 39
From Elias: Andy Pettitte and Raul Ibanez, each less than a month away from his 40th birthday, combined to help the Yankees beat the Reds on Friday night. Pettitte threw eight scoreless innings and Ibanez hit a two-run homer to ice the victory. The last time that a 39-or-older starting pitcher earned a big-league win while a teammate of that age hit a home run was on Aug. 18, 2008, when the Tigers' Kenny Rogers and Gary Sheffield turned the trick against the Rangers in Arlington. No two Yankees ever did that in the same game, although veteran pitchers Red Ruffing (in 1945), Spud Chandler (1947) and Sal Maglie (1958) each won and hit a home run in the same game after their 39th birthdays.
