Chipper & Livan Turn Back The Clock For Braves
From Elias: What does it take to beat a 49-year-old pitcher who is already the oldest major-leaguer ever to win a game? How about a 40-year-old third baseman getting five RBIs and a 37 (maybe)-year-old coming out of the bullpen to earn his first major-league save? Chipper Jones drove in five runs in the Braves' 13-9 comeback win over the Rockies in Denver, and became only the second Braves player since 1920 (when the major leagues began recording RBIs) to have five-or-more RBIs in a game after his 40th birthday. The other: Babe Ruth, who finished his career with the Boston Braves in 1935 and on May 25 of that year, at the age of 40 years, 109 days, hit the last three home runs of his career and had six RBIs in an 11-7 loss in Pittsburgh. Then, who should emerge from the bullpen to save the game by tossing one and two-thirds shutout innings than Livan Hernandez, who was pitching in relief for only the 11th time compared with 474 major-league starts. Hernandez became the first major-leaguer to earn his initial save after so many starts since Aug. 2, 1990, when Frank Tanana saved a Tigers victory over the Yankees after having made 512 starts, mostly for the Angels. The all-time record belongs to Steve Carlton, who was credited with his first and only big-league save, after having made 687 starts, on April 9, 1987; Lefty threw four shutout innings to close out the Indians' 14-3 victory at Toronto, cementing a win for fellow 300-game-winner Phil Niekro.

Hernandez Relieves For The First Time Since 1996
From Elias: Livan Hernandez came in for starter Jair Jurrjens and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings in the Braves' 4-2 loss to the Mets. It was Hernandez's first relief appearance since his major-league debut on September 24, 1996. Hernandez has started 474 regular-season games since that date. Only two other pitchers in MLB history have made 400+ starts between two relief outings: Roger Clemens (681 starts from 1984 to 2007) and Steve Carlton (544 from 1971 to 1986).
