While his ERA (3.45) represented his worst full-season mark in the category since 2004 and his WHIP (1.26) his worst as a National Leaguer, much of that was a result of a sluggish start. Carpenter, fortunately, righted himself quickly, winning 10 of 22 starts with a 2.95 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in the final four months, numbers right in line with his better years in St. Louis. His peripherals backed it up: His FIP (fielding-independent pitching) and xFIP (expected fielding-independent pitching) have scarcely changed the past three seasons, a sign that he's probably more talented than his final 2011 numbers suggest. Age might catch up to Carpenter soon, and spring injuries threatened to either cost him a couple starts in April or keep the Cardinals conservative with his innings total, but he might yet have one more top-30 season left in his arm.","seasonId":2012,"date":"Tue Mar 13"}}
