MLB - Lowe, Alvarez not big on the strikeout
Two pitchers pitching on Sunday - Cleveland's Derek Lowe and Toronto's Henderson Alvarez - are on their way towards making a bit of history this season. Lowe and Alvarez are posting strikeout rates that would be among the lowest in the last 20+ seasons for any starter who pitched at least 50 innings in a season. What makes this even more odd? While Lowe can be understood given his age, lack of strikeouts in previous seasons and ground ball tendencies, Alvarez's average fastball velocity (92.8 mph) actually ranks 16th among all starters, ahead of such notable strikeout names as Clayton Kershaw, Brandon Morrow, Josh Johnson and Zack Greinke.

SUNDAY FANTASY FACTS - Kearns facing old team
Austin Kearns spent part of 2010 and most of 2011 as a Cleveland Indian before accepting an invitation to Marlins spring training this season and making the roster. Entering this series, he bats .220 for his career at Progressive Field, with an on-base percentage of just .309-- his lowest among AL parks except for Fenway (where he's only played one series). He has played five games in Cleveland as a visiting player and gone 2-for-17 (.118, both hits are singles). Has the same 2-for-17 average in his career against Sunday starter Derek Lowe

Lowe Tosses His First Shutout In Nearly Seven Years
From Elias: Derek Lowe threw a six-hit shutout in the Indians' 5-0 victory over the Twins in Minnesota on Tuesday afternoon. Lowe's gem snapped a streak of 214 consecutive starts without pitching a shutout. That was the fourth longest active streak entering Tuesday's action, behind Freddy Garcia (247), Kevin Millwood (238) and Jeff Suppan (218). Prior to Tuesday, Lowe's last shutout came on August 31, 2005 against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Only three players other than Lowe that were in the starting lineup for that game are currently on a major-league roster: Jerry Hairston Jr., Jayson Werth and Jason Repko (currently on the disabled list).
