Shoeless Joe, Archdeacon And Konerko
From Elias: Paul Konerko went 4-for-4 and boosted his season batting average to a major-league-leading .396 as the White Sox thrashed the visiting Indians, 14-7. Konerko became the first White Sox player in the last 88 seasons to finish a day's play with a batting average of .395 or higher (at least 150 at-bats into a season). The last White Sox player to do that was Maurice Archdeacon, a part-time outfielder who was batting .396 after 169 at-bats through the game of July 27, 1924. (Unfortunately for Archdeacon, that was his high-water mark; he batted .210 in 119 at-bats the rest of that season, and had only nine major-league at-bats thereafter.) The only other White Sox player who had such a high batting average this far into a season was Shoeless Joe Jackson himself; in 1920, which was to be his last season in the major leagues, Jackson was batting .399 as late as August 7 (after 391 at-bats). Late the next month, during the final week of the regular season, Jackson acknowledged to a grand jury his role in the Black Sox scandal that scarred the 1919 World Series; he was immediately suspended by the team (he finished that season batting .381) and he never played in the majors again. The last White Sox player to win the American League batting title was Frank Thomas, who batted .347 in 1997. But only one player in the history of the White Sox has ever finished a season with the highest batting average in the major leagues; that was Hall-of-Fame shortstop Luke Appling, who batted a cool .388 in 1936.

Sox running out of superlatives for Konerko
CHICAGO -- For manager Robin Ventura, watching Paul Konerko during his current 12-game hitting streak reminds him of Edgar Martinez, the former two-time AL batting champion and seven-time All-Star.

Konerko Homers For 44th Time Against The Twins
From Elias: Paul Konerko had three hits, including his ninth home run of the season, in the White Sox' 6-0 win over the Twins. The home run was Konerko's 44th career round-tripper against Minnesota. matching his highest total versus any major-league team. (He's also hit 44 homers versus the Tigers.) The only other active players with as many home runs against the Twins as Konerko are Jim Thome (59) and Alex Rodriguez (46).
