Bits: Zito getting the job done at home

I'm not quite sure how San Francisco Giants left-hander Barry Zito does it, since his stuff seems pretty average -- OK, perhaps below average -- but there he was on center stage Wednesday afternoon mowing down the Philadelphia Phillies at AT&T Park for seven innings of four-hit, one-run ball.

Zito And Hubbell
From Elias: Barry Zito tossed seven innings in the Giants' shutout win over the Padres in San Francisco. Zito has won each of the three games that he's started at AT&T Park this season and he hasn't allowed a run in the 21 innings that he's pitched there. Zito is the second Giants pitcher in the modern era (since 1900) to record scoreless outings of seven or more innings in each of his first three home starts of a season. The other is Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell, who did it for the 1933 New York Giants. Hubbell also had two scoreless relief appearances at the Polo Grounds that season within the span of his first three home starts.

Zito Pitches, Giants Win
Barry Zito pitched seven shutout innings in the Giants' 10-0 victory over the Rockies. The Giants have won the last 13 regular-season games started by Zito, the longest such streak for this franchise since the New York Giants won 13 consecutive games started by Sal Maglie spanning the 1951 and 1952 seasons. Zito is 9-0 with a 3.20 earned-run average during this streak. Maglie was 12-0 with a 1.45 earned-run average during his streak, including one game in relief. Barry Zito has thrown seven scoreless innings in each of his two starts this season. The only other pitcher in Giants history to throw 7-plus scoreless innings in each of his first two starts of a season was Al Worthington¿who threw shutouts in each of his first two major-league starts, in July 1953.

Giants Blanks Cardinals With Bases-loaded Walk
From Elias: The Giants blanked the Cardinals, 1-0, with Angel Pagan's bases-loaded walk producing the only run of the game. It was the first time since 1967 that San Francisco won a 1-0 game by virtue of an RBI-walk. On September 1 of that year, in a marathon at Crosley Field in Cincinnati, Dick Groat drew a walk with the bags full in the top of the 21st inning and that plated Jim Ray Hart with the winning run. Barry Zito threw seven scoreless innings and San Francisco's starting pitchers have not allowed an earned run in 26 innings this season. That's the longest streak of innings to begin a season without allowing an earned run for any team's starters since 1976, when the Brewers starters went 31 2/3 innings into the campaign without permitting an earned run.
