Beckett has been fantastic over his last three starts, allowing just three runs over 21.2 innings of work. The great pitching as of late has helped dropped his season ERA to 4.15 to go along with 45 strikeouts and 15 walks.","date":"Sat May 26"},"fullName":"Josh Beckett","seasonOutlook":{"outlook":"If you are a believer in any of the advanced expected ERA metrics (xFIP, SIERA, tERA), you are likely aware that Beckett has been pretty much the same pitcher his entire career, it is just that his surface stats have often been out of whack with his peripherals, good and bad. What these advanced metrics do is take what a pitcher can control most (strikeout rate and walk rate), then regress the numbers more out of his control (hit rate and home run rate) and determine an ERA more reflective of the hurler's skills. Each calculation uses its own recipe and ingredients, but the principle is the same. For the record, Beckett's career ERA is 3.84. His career xFIP and SIERA are both 3.60 while tERA almost pegs him perfectly at 3.94. Of course, the year-to-year variance around his real ERA has been much more severe than the variance around the expected ERA calculations. The moral of the story is, the best way to approach Beckett is to expect an ERA in the mid-to-high 3s, then light candles, say prayers and cross any limbs you are capable of crossing.","seasonId":2012,"date":"Fri Feb 10"},"playerRater30DAY":2.3,"playerRater15DAY":6.7,"positionRank":51}
