Almost all of it could be attributed to struggles against the fastball; after back-to-back years of a 1.000-plus OPS against the pitch, he managed a .784 mark against it in 2011, and the poor performance made it easier for pitchers to get ahead of him in the count and then fluster him with off-speed stuff. For a hitter to decline in performance so suddenly is odd, especially at age 32, and perhaps the adjustment to new surroundings contributed. Werth did, after all, still nearly register a 20-20 season -- he fell one steal short -- so don't count out a rebound.
