An Efficient Shutout For Santana
From Elias: Johan Santana, who chronically receives little run support from his Mets teammates, was staked to an early 4-0 lead for the second time in two starts; unlike Monday night in Pittsburgh, however, this time Santana held the lead, blanking the Padres, 9-0, in a complete-game four-hitter in which he threw only 96 pitches. Remarkably, Santana threw exactly nine pitches in each of the game's last five innings - the first time in his major-league career that he has thrown fewer than 10 pitches in each of five straight full innings in one game. The last major-leaguer to do that was Carl Pavano, did it for the Twins in a victory over the White Sox in July 2010.
